Tips and suggestions

  • Ensure you have a job lined up before you quit. It is hard to explain the rationale in an interview if you left and the reason could be you were unhappy, the pay was not acceptable, or Bob from HR was smelly…
  • Do not tell anyone you are looking for a new job. Telling colleagues or your manager will negatively impact your current position. You will be labelled a problem employee and will find that training, and other perks will cease. Wait until you secure, and sign the job offer before you tell people you are quitting.
  • Giving notice. Unless you have signed an employment contract that stipulates you have to give notice, you should check with your provincial labour laws. It’s nice to do so and to tell the next employer you left on good terms, because sooner or later you will probably jump ship on that employer as well.
  • Be mindful of vacation entitlements. Some companies may claw back your vacation pay if you had not fully accrued it prior to leaving.
  • Use up your medical and other benefits. Get to the dentist, use up a few more massages. These benefits are yours to use so why not get a pair of glasses before you leave. When you get to the next company, three months later you will have fresh benefits to use.
  • Start building up your references. Its good to prep them before you move on to another company.
  • Make sure your resume is in good shape and start thinking about how to prepare for interviews.

How to quit, do I need to write a letter?

  • I would not worry about the medium used. Send an email, draw a picture or type a letter.
  • The letter should state when you are terminating your employment and any forwarding address.
  • Keep it simple and we would not recommend inserting emotionally charged wording.
  • We read an article online and they stated that the termination letter can be used towards other employers. This is wrong and illegal, so do not worry about your employer sending the letter out to the masses.
